This morning around 10:30 we were pleased to find out that we had become proud parents to a beautiful little girl in north Vietnam. She is perfect. She has stolen our hearts. Her name is Mattine. We are hoping to travel soon. We are elated and so thankful that we get to share this experience with friends and family around us.
We received a very profound e-mail from a friend, "Sept 11th is a day that we truly realize how precious life is. What a perfect day for this news!" We couldn't agree more and are humbled by this day.

Congratulations Shawney and Paul! I am so very excited for you and so moved by this amazing journey in your life! I met a friend once who told me the story of her adoption and the way she described it as being a “gifted child” … a totally new meaning to the word that is often associated with an unusual talent or intellect, but rather the true meaning of “life as a gift”. And so I have been moved by your story, to the point that it is not just the idea of a traditional gift where one is the giver and one is the recipient. In this case, it is both ways. Mattine is a gift to you and Paul just as you and Paul are a gift to her. How very special and how very sweet!
You know that your mom and I often speak of our big brother, Junie. I must tell you this story in case it is one that your mom doesn’t know, but I think you will find it incredibly special. He told me of one of the most rewarding encounters in his career when he was the attorney for an adoption case. He arranged to hand over a child to a couple in a church rather than an office or courtroom. He said it was one of the greatest feelings he had ever experienced, which did not really compare to the day that he met his own sons, when he played a significant role in the “gift of life” and forever changed 3 people’s lives!
